Another Great Book Giveaway!

10 11 2011

I just got clued in to another great opportunity to help put books into the hands of kids, and thought I’d pass it on. I fondly remember the Choose Your Own Adventure series of books from my childhood. For those who may not be familiar, the Choose Your Own Adventure titles are written in an interactive manner, where the reader gets to determine the course of action for the story. As it states on the CYOA website:

“Widely commended for its appeal to reluctant readers, the interactive, multiple-choice multiple-ending series is among the most popular series for children ever published, with more than 250 million copies sold in 38 languages.”

Like a lot of kids, I would end up essentially reading these books cover-to-cover. I wanted to know what would happen if I chose the first option and turned to page 83, or if I took the second option and turned to page 56. They were super-addictive.

As a teaching tool, these books are great for a multitude of reasons. First, they are available at a variety of reading levels. Also, they have a wide range of genres to appeal to fans of science fiction, horror, fantasy, historical fiction, and more. They do a great job of hooking readers by giving them a chance to take ownership of the story and determining the course of action that they like best. They also teach valuable comprehension skills, such as making predictions about the text and paying attention to details to inform their decision making.

During the month of November, a Choose Your Own Adventure book will be given away for every new “Like” received on the CYOA Facebook page. They’ll be giving away up to 50,000 books this month, and all you have to do is click “Like.” Over 1,000 books have been given away so far, but there’s still a long way to go! So, go ahead and “Like” them, and help spread the word!
