Digesting the New 52: Sex and Violence Backlash?

19 01 2012

Here’s a recent news item from a DC area FOX affiliate which criticizes the DC relaunch as being a bit too adult. I’m a bit torn on the subject. Today’s average comic book reader is 30, not 13. And the bulk of the books shown as being filled with “sex and violence” are rated as ‘T+,’ meaning they are intended for ages 16 and up… or in layman’s terms, closer to ‘R’ than ‘PG-13.’

That said, I still strongly believe that a typical comic book with Batman on the cover should be safe for a kid to read. That’s not to say there can’t be more mature stories with mainstream heroes, but Batman and Detective Comics need to stay in that ‘PG’ to ‘PG-13’ area, and titles that aren’t intended for that audience need to be clearly labeled, and not with just a small ‘T’ thrown in the box with the bar code.
