5 04 2013

Here’s a great opportunity for students, especially those who love super heroes, courtesy of DC Comics and Capstone Publishing! The deadline for entries is coming up soon (April 15th), so there’s not a lot to spare. It’s open to grades 3 to 6, and prizes include a trip for four to tour both DC Comics offices and Warner Brothers Animation Studios. I may have to pretend that I’m a fifth grader so I can win this myself! Details for how to enter are below, and at the official site!

Super heroes like Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman have super powers, like the ability to fly. They also have many human powers that make them heroic, like courage and imagination. Who is a super hero in your life? What makes that person special and what “super powers” does he or she have?

How It Works

If you’re in grades 3–6 , write about the real super hero in your life. Your submission should describe your hero and describe why that person is a hero in your eyes. Entries will be judged on originality, creativity, and heroism. The top five entries will be posted online, where kids from across the country will vote to determine the grand prize winner!

Official Contest Prize

A trip for four to:

    • An exclusive tour of DC Entertainment Offices
    • A VIP tour for four of Warner Bros. Animation Studios (including travel, lodging and transportation)

Help end the PAAS monopoly this Easter.

Why pay five bucks for an egg decorating kit when you can maybe save a little money, get eggs that look just as colorful, and not have your kitchen smelling like a vinegar fart?

This is a pretty awesome idea. I found it on Facebook, so I don’t have any idea who originated it. Apparently Kool-Aid works just as well as egg coloring kits… although it’s recommended to add a little orange to the lemonade to make yellow, in order to give it a brighter color. I believe the formula is one packet of Kool-Aid with 2/3 a cup of water.

By the way, Patton Oswalt does a hilarious bit on the PAAS monopoly, but it’s definitely NSFW due to filthy language and all that stuff. Enjoy!

LEGO Spill Shuts Down Highway Lane In West Virginia

LEGO Spill Shuts Down Highway Lane In West Virginia

Part of Interstate 79 was shut down in Harrison County, West Virginia yesterday afternoon after a mysterious LEGO spill obstructed one of the lanes. Go home Santa, you’re drunk. When reached for comment, one local resident had this to say, “Hands down the most exciting thing to happen since deer hunting season.”

Thanks to Chris, who lives right by where the spill took place, which is only 30-minutes from where I was born. You should take a pilgrimage to say what’s up to my relatives and tell them to send me some pepperoni rolls.

Bleeding Cool: Disney Announce Skylanders Type Game Called Disney Infinity That Uses Player Creativity

16 01 2013

I have a nephew who is an absolute Skylanders fiend, and if I were a kid his age, I probably would be also. It’s a great concept: A video game with action figures to go with it… and when the figures are placed on a special platform, they can be used in the game!

Disney has decided to get on board with a similar game that uses all of their hottest properties like Cars, The Incredibles, Toy Story, Phineas & Ferb, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Monsters, Inc. At first glance, it may come across as an attempt to cash in on the popularity of Skylanders, but it looks like they’ve got their own unique spin on things and the designs for both the game and the figures look great!

Disney Infinity is something you are going to start hearing a lot about. Especially if you are a parent.

Stich Kingdom reported that Disney and Avalanche Software took over the El Capitan Theatre to announce their new video game project called Disney Infinity. In the ilk of Skylanders, Disney Infinity is a new game that will utilise a ‘Disney Infinity reader’ to process physical toys into the game that the player can then interact with.

Through the ‘toybox’ mode, players will be able to have characters from Disney and Pixar’s back catalogue interact with a world they create. In addition to that, players will be able to unlock ‘play set’ mode that will allow them to explore the worlds of their favorite Disney movies and play through some of the classic storylines.

The game puts emphasis on player creativity, and as Disney Interactive’s co-president John Pleasants explains:

Disney Infinity is not a single game… It’s up to you to unlock the heart and soul of Disney Infinity.

John  Lasseter was also in attendence and added:

This is one of the most creative things in the interactive world that I’ve ever seen

That is a bold claim. But then again, Lasseter is no chump when ti comes to these things.

The game seems to use a token system that will allow the player to unlock new attributes and locations. If you decide to give in and buy Disney Infinity, you would get Sully, Mr. Incredible and Jack Sparrow characters as starters as well as the Monsters University ‘”landmark token”.

Cars sets will also be available on release with The Lone Ranger, Phineas and Ferb and Toy Story in Space sets not far after release.

In all seriousness, I find that Fantasy Football is a lot more like a deck-building card game or CCG, or even more of a army-building miniatures game. And I think that all of these have untapped potential as educational tools!

None of this explains why I can’t convince my Fantasy Football friends to try tabletop gaming, or vice versa. Sigh.
