Bleeding Cool: Disney Announce Skylanders Type Game Called Disney Infinity That Uses Player Creativity

16 01 2013

I have a nephew who is an absolute Skylanders fiend, and if I were a kid his age, I probably would be also. It’s a great concept: A video game with action figures to go with it… and when the figures are placed on a special platform, they can be used in the game!

Disney has decided to get on board with a similar game that uses all of their hottest properties like Cars, The Incredibles, Toy Story, Phineas & Ferb, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Monsters, Inc. At first glance, it may come across as an attempt to cash in on the popularity of Skylanders, but it looks like they’ve got their own unique spin on things and the designs for both the game and the figures look great!

Disney Infinity is something you are going to start hearing a lot about. Especially if you are a parent.

Stich Kingdom reported that Disney and Avalanche Software took over the El Capitan Theatre to announce their new video game project called Disney Infinity. In the ilk of Skylanders, Disney Infinity is a new game that will utilise a ‘Disney Infinity reader’ to process physical toys into the game that the player can then interact with.

Through the ‘toybox’ mode, players will be able to have characters from Disney and Pixar’s back catalogue interact with a world they create. In addition to that, players will be able to unlock ‘play set’ mode that will allow them to explore the worlds of their favorite Disney movies and play through some of the classic storylines.

The game puts emphasis on player creativity, and as Disney Interactive’s co-president John Pleasants explains:

Disney Infinity is not a single game… It’s up to you to unlock the heart and soul of Disney Infinity.

John  Lasseter was also in attendence and added:

This is one of the most creative things in the interactive world that I’ve ever seen

That is a bold claim. But then again, Lasseter is no chump when ti comes to these things.

The game seems to use a token system that will allow the player to unlock new attributes and locations. If you decide to give in and buy Disney Infinity, you would get Sully, Mr. Incredible and Jack Sparrow characters as starters as well as the Monsters University ‘”landmark token”.

Cars sets will also be available on release with The Lone Ranger, Phineas and Ferb and Toy Story in Space sets not far after release.

Superman over California

January 3, 2013
By:

Superman over California was spotted by Kyle Gough while cycling in California. The “Man of Steel” (not really), turned out to be just an impressive life-size remote controlled toy. When noticing the Superman figure, Kyle was able to capture the unusual sight on his cellphone.

In the video, you can see the figure along with a mini-replica version of Wonder Woman’s invisible jet.

Kyle Gough’s interesting video has been gaining popularity and he posted the following statement under his YouTube video:

“I was cycling down PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) in S.Cal with my buddy and during our casual conversation, we had to stop because Superman flew overhead. We pulled up just in time to watch him land, and after a quick battery change, I grabbed the only thing I had on me, my cell phone, and recorded the second flight.”

Gough also told media sources:

“(It) is easily the coolest custom RC (remote control) plane I’ve ever seen. Damn near life-size and complete with a cape.”

Daily Mail: UP fan takes to the skies in a house by tying hundreds of balloons to it… just like character in Pixar film

20 11 2012

By Daily Mail Reporter

PUBLISHED: 07:37 EST, 19 November 2012 | UPDATED: 11:03 EST, 19 November 2012

A cluster-balloonist who became the first person to fly the English Channel has launched a house into the sky just like in the Disney movie ‘Up’.

Intrepid Jonathan Trappe, 38, took off just like the 78-year-old character Carl Frederickson in the hit movie.

Trappe, from Raleigh, North Carolina, stepped into the cartoon themed home before soaring above the Leon International Balloon festival in Mexico yesterday.

Trappe was using the event as a warm-up for his planned trans-Atlantic flight scheduled for next summer.

He aims to complete the 2,500 mile journey across the pond in a seven foot lifeboat carried by 365 huge helium balloons.

Trappe has invested $170,000 into his Atlantic dream, for which he’s been training his whole career, and now he’s launching a site so ordinary people can play their part this amazing adventure.

The daredevil, is learning to sail a lifeboat, in case he needs to ditch into the ocean during the danger-filled mission.

The unique gondola will have an open roof for take-off but a canopy to protect Trappe from high-altitude winds and frost bite during the crossing.

He will fly at between 18,000ft  and 25,000ft, beating his previous world altitude record of 21,600ft, and must fly uninterrupted a distance ten times longer than his previous world record of 230 miles in order to succeed.

The adventurer, who holds records for crossing the Alps, flying the most cluster balloons, and the longest distance, has spent his entire career building up to the momentous expedition.

He said: ‘I didn’t wake up one day and think: ‘I’m going to fly across the Atlantic.’

‘Every attempt before this was geared towards this flight. I’ve been training for a long time.’

NBC News: Disney buying Lucasfilm, will release new ‘Star Wars’ movie in 2015

30 10 2012
By NBC News staff and wires

Updated at 7:15 p.m. ET: Walt Disney Co. is buying Lucasfilm in a $4 billion deal that brings the best-selling “Star Wars” franchise under the Disney umbrella, with plans to release Episode 7 of the long-running saga in 2015.

Disney has long had a close relationship with closely held Lucasfilm and founder George Lucas, including featured attractions at Disney theme parks such as Star Tours at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida.

“It’s now time for me to pass ‘Star Wars’ on to a new generation of filmmakers,” said Lucas, 68, in a statement.

The cash and stock deal is valued at about $4.05 billion, Disney said. Lucasfilm is solely owned by George Lucas.

“This transaction combines a world-class portfolio of content including Star Wars, one of the greatest family entertainment franchises of all time, with Disney’s unique and unparalleled creativity across multiple platforms, businesses, and markets to generate sustained growth and drive significant long-term value,” Disney CEO Robert Iger said in a statement.

Lucas will act as creative consultant on the new “Star Wars” film, with more feature films expected beyond Episode 7.

The six “Star Wars” feature films have earned a total of $4.4 billion at the box office alone and offer “a sustainable source of high quality, branded content with global appeal,” according to the Disney news release.

The deal is subject to federal antitrust approval.

Wise Words from Silent Bob

30 07 2012

There’s a trick to being whatever you want to be in life.

It starts with the simple belief that you are what or who you say you are.

It starts, like all faiths, with a belief – a belief predicated more on whimsy than reality.

And you’ve gotta believe for everybody else, too – until you can show them proof.

If you’re lucky, someone starts believing with you – first theoretically, then in practice. And two people believing are the start of a congregation.

You build a congregation of believers and eventually you set out to craft a cathedral. Sometimes it’s just a church; sometimes it turns out to be a chapel.

Folks who don’t build churches will try to tell you how you’re doing it wrong, even as your steeple breaks the clouds. Never listen.

Newsarama: EARTH’S MIGHTIEST HEROES Canceled for New AVENGERS Series?

7 06 2012

Newsarama is reporting that the excellent Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes animated series that is currently airing on Disney XD will be canceled at the end of the second season. This is absolutely criminal, as the ratings for A:EMH have been consistently good, and it’s one of the most-watched shows on the channel.

Debuting in 2013 will be a re-tooled series called Marvel’s Avengers Assemble, which will feature a lineup similar to that of the Avengers live action movie, and will echo the look and tone of the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon.

I’m really put off by this, as I found A:EMH to be nearly flawless. It’s the Avengers cartoon that I’ve always wanted to see, and it’s been successful. I went so far as to dress up my 2 1/2 year old daughter like the Wasp for Halloween last year. Why change? It’s a sad day to be an old-school Avengers fan.

Multiple outlets say that Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes will be ending its run on Disney XD after two seasons, in favor of a new animated series starting in 2013.

Sources including Marvel TV News cite a “print only” press release stating the following:

The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes won’t be renewed for the 3rd Season. Marvel Animation will present their newly developed series Marvel’s Avengers Assemble in 2013.”

The report came with a purported promotional image ofAvengers Assemble, featuring the movie Avengers cast — Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye — along with the Falcon.

In recent weeks, rumors had mounted on sites like Comic Book Movie that Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes was targeted for cancellation, in favor of a new show closer in line to the recently launched Ultimate Spider-Man series, its partner on the Sunday morning “Marvel Universe” programming block.

Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes debuted on Oct. 20, 2010, with the currently unfolding second season starting on April 1 of this year. The show has featured a large cast — including the movie Avengers along with Wasp, Hank Pym, Black Panther and more — plus guest appearances from characters such as Luke Cage, Iron Fist and the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Marvel declined to comment on the story, or the veracity of the press release. Keep reading Newsarama for more as this develops.
