Writing Contest: Be a Super Hero. Read!

5 04 2013

Here’s a great opportunity for students, especially those who love super heroes, courtesy of DC Comics and Capstone Publishing! The deadline for entries is coming up soon (April 15th), so there’s not a lot to spare. It’s open to grades 3 to 6, and prizes include a trip for four to tour both DC Comics offices and Warner Brothers Animation Studios. I may have to pretend that I’m a fifth grader so I can win this myself! Details for how to enter are below, and at the official site!

Super heroes like Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman have super powers, like the ability to fly. They also have many human powers that make them heroic, like courage and imagination. Who is a super hero in your life? What makes that person special and what “super powers” does he or she have?

How It Works

If you’re in grades 3–6 , write about the real super hero in your life. Your submission should describe your hero and describe why that person is a hero in your eyes. Entries will be judged on originality, creativity, and heroism. The top five entries will be posted online, where kids from across the country will vote to determine the grand prize winner!

Official Contest Prize

A trip for four to:

    • An exclusive tour of DC Entertainment Offices
    • A VIP tour for four of Warner Bros. Animation Studios (including travel, lodging and transportation)
    • A collection of DC Comics and Capstone merchandise

  • A collection of DC Comics and Capstone merchandise
  • The hero featured in the winning entry will win $2,500 to be donated to a charity of his or her choice

Edutopia: IPEVO Document Camera Giveaway

11 11 2012

Edutopia LogoWhen I started my most recent job, I knew I needed a document camera. They make life so much easier, and I’ve come to view the video projector/laptop/document camera combo to be an absolutely fundamental set of tools for teaching.

Not every school has the means to provide this stuff, though. Document cameras are seen as expensive luxury items, and given the current state of education funding, chances are if your school hasn’t invested in them already, it’s going to be a while before they can afford to.

Document cameras typically cost in the range of $300 to $500, and upwards from there for high-end models. That always seemed ridiculous to me. And in my search to find a less-expensive alternative, I came across the IPEVO Point 2. I didn’t expect much for $70, but the reviews were good and I figured it was worth a shot.

It ended up being a valuable purchase, and one I highly recommend for anyone in the market for an inexpensive document camera. Frankly, I think mine works every bit as well as some cameras I’ve used that cost five times as much. And it’s much easier to use than more expensive models.

Edutopia is currently doing a contest where they’ll give five lucky winners a free IPEVO Point 2 document camera. Don’t miss out on your chance to win!

Help stop Zombie Mouth and get a free download of Plants vs. Zombies!

29 10 2012

Popcap Games and the American Dental Association have teamed up for a great Halloween promotion. Instead of giving away candy for Trick-or-Treat, they’re offering a printable coupon with a code for a free download of the mega-popular game Plants vs. Zombies that you can pass out instead!

I’m not sure I’ll be able to talk my wife into not giving away candy for Halloween — she’s a traditionalist — but I’ll most likely print these out and give them to my students. It’s a great idea to help promote healthy dental habits at a time of year when they are most likely to be forgotten. And it’s a super fun game, too!

More information can be found at the Stop Zombie Mouth website. Check it out!

Free Classroom Supplies from TeacherLists.com

15 09 2012

I’m a little late on this one, but I appreciate Sue sending me the link. TeacherLists.com is a site where teachers can posts lists of supplies their students will need for the year, as well as a “wish list” of stuff they’d like to have for their classroom. Parents can print this out and do their back to school shopping, while also helping the teacher earn rewards for their class.

Here’s the info from the TeacherLists.com web site:

TeacherLists.com is revolutionizing – yes, seriously, revolutionizing – the old-fashioned school supply lists and teacher wish lists that have been circulating around schools for decades. Whether it’s parents frantically searching for the right supplies (or the tattered list) on the night before school begins or teachers wishing and hoping (and praying!) for the extra supplies they need for a thriving and effective classroom, TeacherLists.com is here to help.

It’s simple really – one site where all parents and all teachers can connect around all lists. That’s it.

No more teachers scrambling to create their lists or get them to parents – that’s way easier with TeacherLists.com. No more parents jumping from one district site to another trying to find the right list for each of their three children. It’s all here. It’s all easier.

And – oh, yeah – we’ve got rewards for schools and free samples for teachers and discounts for parents to make it all even better.

TeacherLists.com is the latest parent-to-teacher and parent-to-school connection from the folks at School Family Media, the company behind PTO Today (the magazine and site for school PTO and PTA leaders), SchoolFamily.com (insight for school families), the School Family Nights® program and more.

Launched with amazing support from our founding partner (and National Presenting Partner), Bounty, the site now has support from a host of leading brands including Elmer’s, Puffs, Avery-Dennison and Mr. Clean. Each of our partners is committed to helping teachers and parents and schools serve children well.

Check out the site to learn more. I know that school has already started for most of us, but there still might be some opportunities to earn rewards and get free stuff! Check it out!

Free Admission to LEGOLAND for Teachers!

9 09 2012

Thanks to Crystal for passing this along. My daughter got to go to Legoland last weekend with her Grandma Dina and Auntie Em, and had an absolute blast. My wife and I were talking about how we’d like to go sometime ourselves, but it was a matter of having the time to do it and the funds to make it happen. Well, it looks like that is getting a little easier!

Legoland California Resort is offering free admission to teachers, and discounted prices for our families and friends. There are, of course, some restrictions. But there are some nice blocks of time when the deal is available… like right now!

For more information, visit the Legoland Special Events and Offers page.

FREE Mastermind Board Game for Teachers

8 09 2012

Thanks to my friend Sue for passing this along! Pressman Toy Corporation is offering a free copy of the game Mastermind for use in classrooms! If you’re a teacher, simply fill out the form, and a copy of the game will be shipped to you at your school. While supplies last, of course!

I like having a selection of fun and educational board games in my classroom, as they make a great free-time or reward activity. This one looks right up my alley! Here’s a description of the game from the Mastermind website:

It’s the code maker vs the codebreaker in this classic board game of logic and deduction. MASTERMIND board game sets itself apart from other traditional board games as a fun and challenging game of smarts. With over 2,000 code possibilities, you can match wits over and over again. MASTERMIND board game is available in its award-winning classic version, Ultimate MASTERMIND for experts, in travel editions for fun on-the-go, and several children’s versions including MASTERMIND Animal Towers for children ages 6 and older.

In order to win in this classic board game, players must use strategy and problem solving skills to outsmart their opponent. One player is the codemaker and creates a code of colored pegs. The other player is the codebreaker and attempts to break the code with help from clues given by the codemaker. Players take turns being codemaker and codebreaker and whoever breaks the code in the least amount of moves wins. Once the code is broken, the players can switch, finding out who can break the code more quickly, to get the title of MASTERMIND!

It’s a $12.99 value, and I’m very impressed that Pressman is passing along freebies to teachers! Very cool of them! Here’s the link
