EW: Futurama canceled. Again.

The Planet Express ship will soon make its final delivery.

Comedy Central has decided not to renew Futurama, which means that the 31st-century-set animated comedy will end its 140-episode run on Sept. 4. The final 13 episodes, which represent the second half of season 7, begin airing on June 19 at 10 p.m.

Comedy Central has declined to renew 'Futurama,' meaning the next 13 episodes will be the last. My wife is pissed.

Comedy Central has declined to renew ‘Futurama,’ meaning the next 13 episodes will be the last. My wife is pissed.

Futurama is no stranger to cancellation, of course: The series aired from 1999 to 2003 before Fox sent Fry & Co. into oblivion. After thriving in reruns on Adult Swim, Futurama was relaunched in 2007 with four-direct-to-DVD movies that Comedy Central ran in half-hour increments as a 16-episode fifth season in 2008-09. Comedy Central subsequently ordered a sixth season of 26 episodes, which aired in 2010-11, and a seventh season of 26 episodes, the first half of which debuted in 2012.

The news did not come as a shock to executive producer David X. Cohen and creator Matt Groening, who had thought their space explorations were ending three previous times (after the Fox run, after the four movies, and after Comedy Central’s first 26-episode order). “I felt like we were already in the bonus round on these last couple of seasons, so I can’t say I was devastated by the news,” Cohen tells EW. “It was what I had expected two years earlier. At this point I keep a suitcase by my office door so I can be cancelled at a moment’s notice.”

The series won the Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program twice, in 2002 and 2011. It has declined in the ratings, though, averaging 2.6 million viewers in 2010, 2.3 million in 2011, and 1.7 million in 2012.

Comedy Central’s EVP of Programming Dave Bernath views the network’s decision as “the natural end” to the show’s improbable comeback. “That’s a helluva run that few shows achieve, and especially given the fact that it came back to life, it’s really an amazing story,” he says. “I’m more thankful and feel a sense of gratitude toward the whole process — and that we found a way to keep going for 52 more episodes — than I really am even thinking about the ending. It’s a blessing that it came back and lasted so long.”

‘Batman’ drops off suspect at police station, vanishes into night

By Michael Holden, Reuters

NBC News LogoLONDON – A mystery man dressed as Batman demonstrated the same crime-fighting skills as the caped crusader when he handed over a suspect wanted for burglary in Britain.

Surveillance footage showed a portly figure wearing an ill-fitting costume including gloves, cape and mask, bringing a 27-year-old man to a police station in Bradford in northern England.

The suspect was arrested and charged with handling stolen goods and fraud-related offences, according to the force. But the costumed crime-fighter disappeared into the night without leaving his name.

“The person who brought the wanted man into the station was dressed in a full Batman outfit,” a spokeswoman for West Yorkshire Police said. “His identity, however, remains unknown.”

The suspect was handed over early on February 25. Police released photos of the footage Monday.

Merry Christmas from EDUtainmentBLOG!

I thought this was sacrilegious until I saw Batman on the roof. I also appreciate the inclusion of Bill and Ted rocking out for the Newborn King.

Anyway, may you and yours have a happy holiday and a Merry Christmas!

TODAY: ‘Two and a Half Men’ star calls show ‘filth,’ says fans should ‘stop watching’

27 11 2012

Well, if he would’ve said the show was “crap,” I’d be right there with him. Is it “filth?” Well, I’d say it’s not appropriate for younger viewers, and I certainly wish more parents would pay attention to the ratings and monitor what their kids are watching. But “filth?” That’s a little harsh.

Especially when they’re paying you about $350k an episode to make it. And apparently have no plans to quit any time soon.

‘Two and a Half Men’ star calls show ‘filth,’ says fans should ‘stop watching’

By Jordan Zakarin and Lesley Goldberg, The Hollywood Reporter

At this point, it might be best to turn “Two and a Half Men” into a reality show. Less than two years removed from Charlie Sheen’s infamous meltdown that saw him removed from the CBS Chuck Lorre comedy, the show’s young star, Angus T. Jones — the half-man in the show’s title — has blasted the series as “filth” and suggested that people should stop watching.

“Jake from ‘Two and a Half Men’ means nothing. He is a non-existent character,” Jones says in a video for the Forerunner Christian Church, which is based in Fremont, Calif. “If you watch ‘Two and a Half Men,’ please stop watching ‘Two and a Half Men.’ I’m on ‘Two and a Half Men’ and I don’t want to be on it. Please stop watching it and filling your head with filth. People say it’s just entertainment. Do some research on the effects of television and your brain, and I promise you you’ll have a decision to make when it comes to television, especially with what you watch.”

Jones continues with the testimonial, intimating that the show is part of the plan of “the enemy” — presumably Satan. He adds, “If I am doing any harm, I don’t want to be here. I don’t want to be contributing to the enemy’s plan … You cannot be a true God-fearing person and be on a television show like that. I know I can’t. I’m not OK with what I’m learning, what the bible says and being on that television show.”

Jones, 19, gave a testimony in October at the Voice of Prophecy in Los Angeles, where he attends services.

BleedingCool: Jerry Nelson, Muppeteer – 1934-2012

24 08 2012

Written on August 24, 2012 by

It is being reported that Jerry Nelson has passed away, aged 78.

Starting in 1965, Jerry Nelson was a Muppeteer. His first role was as Rowlf the dog’s right hand, filling in while Frank Oz had some time away. Nelson was right there, with Jim Henson, the two of them playing the piano in sympatico. What a great endorsement to get his career going.

But that was just the beginning.

Amongst Nelson’s most famous characters are Count von Count, Emmett Otter, Floyd Pepper, Kermit’s nephew Robin, Marjory the Trash Heap and Gobo Fraggle.

And I love them all. And I know that they’ll live on. And I know that they’ll somehow keep Jerry with us, in a way.

For the character’s first seven years, Nelson performed as Mr. Snuffleupagus, but in 1978, had to step aside over problems with back pain. It’s now been over a decade since Nelson started to phase out the rest of his Muppet performances, due to ongoing and varied health issues.

He continued performing as Floyd Pepper until 2005, and went on to provide the voice for Count Von Count, while Matt Vogel performed the gestures, right up until the character’s most recent recording sessions. There are still some of these new Count sketches to be aired.

While Nelson could not perform character roles in the new movie, he did contribute to last year’s The Muppets, reprising his role as the announcer for The Muppet Show during the big telethon sequence. It really could not, should not, have been any other way.

Newsarama: Whedon Confirmed on AVENGERS 2, Working on Marvel TV Series

7 08 2012

This makes me happy. Very, very happy. Joss has long been a favorite of mine, and he did a spectacular job on Avengers. I think TV is his true element, though, and it’s awesome to know he’ll be involved in whatever this mystery project turns out to be!

Joss Whedon is returning to both write and direct an Avengers sequel and develop a live-action Marvel TV series, Variety reports.

Joss Whedon answers questions at his Q&A panel during Comic Con 2012.

The news was announced by Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger on Tuesday during the company’s earnings call. The TV series will reportedly be for Disney-owned ABC, though it’s unconfirmed at this point if it’s related to the rumored show set in the Avengers world that was reported on late last month.

In May, Whedon told the Los Angeles Timesthat he was “very torn” about returning for a second Avengers film, calling it, “an enormous amount of work telling what is ultimately somebody else’s story.” Avengers has become the third highest-grossing film in box office history on both the domestic and worldwide charts, with a current combined total of $1.46 billion.

Whedon has an acclaimed background in TV as the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer,Angel and Firefly; all shows that cultivated loyal fanbases. Last month at Comic-Con in San Diego, he stated that he’d enjoy a return to television, saying, “TV rules. Most of the good storytelling being done on the screen in America is being done on TV”
